“If only it could talk’
What an absolute delight to offer for sale this stunning oak dome topped coffer.
This exquisite piece has intricate marquetry inlay revealing the name ‘Magdalena Minten’ and even more wonderfully the date ‘Anno 1809’, indicating that it was commissioned for Magdalena on her marriage in 1809.
It is wonderful to think of this coffer in the context of when it was created; the Napolenic Wars were rumbling on across Europe, George III was on the throne, Jane Austen was penning Sense and Sensibility and Charles Darwin was born.
This documentary coffer is a masterpiece of workmanship with intricate marquetry detailing by German craftsmen. We think it would have been treasured by Magdelena, but we wish we knew a little more about where it has been for the last 215 years!
