Last week we had the absolute pleasure of installing some beautiful antique furnishings for one of our favourite customers, world-renowned English singer and songwriter Tessa Niles.
For the first instalment of this ongoing project, our client was looking to furnish her warm and cosy English country kitchen diner. Working closely with her, we curated Victorian and Georgian antiques that would tie the space together beautifully.
This recent installation centred around an original early 19th century mahogany tilt-top table paired with newly reupholstered Georgian dining chairs.
The Victorian table dates back to the mid-19th century and features the period’s ornate design elements. It has a round top that can be tilted up when not in use, making it great for a multi-use entertaining space. The base consisted of three baluster-turned columns on concave platform feet connected by reeded quadrants. The warm reddish-brown mahogany wood has a rich patina, showing the table’s age and provenance.
Complementing the table are a set of four Georgian Chippendale style dining chairs from the late 18th century. Their frames are constructed from mahogany as well, with intricate carved detailing along the top rails. The chairs originally had worn fabric seats, so we carefully stripped away the tattered fabric and set to work reupholstering the frames with new textiles. Upholstery is a complex process that involves selecting complementary fabrics, creating fitted covers, and expertly applying trim, studding and tufting for a polished finish. In this case, with a warm, eye catching on trend Ikat style fabric, gave a sumptuous ethnic feel. The polished wood and opulent upholstery create a timeless pairing.
Delivered in person, the installation process, with care and precision went smoothly and the client was absolutely thrilled with how the antiques looked situated in the space. The Victorian table serves as the ideal focal point, while the refurbished Georgian chairs provide a welcoming seating area.
